The Great Barrier Reef, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is the world's largest coral reef system. Stretching over 2,300 kilometers, it is so vast that it can be seen from space. The reef is home to an extraordinary diversity of marine life, including over 1,500 species of fish, 400 types of coral, and numerous species of sharks, dolphins, and sea turtles. However, the reef is under serious threat. Rising ocean temperatures due to climate change have caused mass coral bleaching events, where stressed corals expel the algae that give them color and nutrients. If temperatures remain elevated, the coral dies. Between 2016 and 2020, the reef experienced three major bleaching events, devastating large sections. The Australian government has invested billions of dollars in reef protection programs. These include water quality improvement initiatives, crown-of-thorns starfish control, and research into heat-resistant coral varieties. Despite these efforts, scientists warn that unless global carbon emissions are significantly reduced, the reef could be functionally destroyed by 2050.
