Alexander Graham Bell is widely credited with inventing the telephone in 1876. Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1847 and later moved to Canada and then the United States. He was deeply interested in sound and speech, partly because both his mother and his wife were deaf. Bell's work on the telephone began as an attempt to improve the telegraph. While experimenting with sending multiple telegraph messages along a single wire, he discovered that it was possible to transmit the human voice electrically. On March 10, 1876, Bell made the first successful telephone call to his assistant Thomas Watson, saying the now-famous words: 'Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.' The invention changed the world dramatically. Within a few years, telephone lines were being installed across cities. By the early 1900s, millions of people were using telephones. Bell went on to work on many other inventions, but the telephone remained his greatest achievement.
