Sentence Ordering Test 10 - The Journey of Coffee
Passage
The story of coffee begins in Ethiopia, where, according to legend, a goatherd named Kaldi noticed that his goats became unusually energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. Curious, he tried the berries himself and felt a similar burst of energy. Word of these energising berries spread to nearby monasteries, where monks began making a drink from them to stay awake during long evening prayers. By the 15th century, coffee had reached the Arabian Peninsula. Coffee houses, known as qahveh khaneh, became popular gathering places in cities like Mecca, Cairo, and Istanbul. These establishments were centres of social activity where people discussed politics, listened to music, and played chess. They became so important that they were sometimes referred to as 'schools of the wise.' Coffee arrived in Europe in the 17th century and initially faced suspicion from some religious groups. However, after Pope Clement VIII tasted it and gave his approval, coffee houses quickly spread across the continent. London alone had over three hundred coffee houses by the mid-1600s. Today, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world after oil.
