Main Idea Test 10 - Marie Curie
Passage
Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1867. As a young woman, she moved to Paris to study science at the Sorbonne University. At that time, very few women studied science, but Marie was determined to follow her dream. She worked hard and graduated at the top of her class. Together with her husband Pierre Curie, Marie discovered two new elements: polonium and radium. Their research on radioactivity was groundbreaking. In 1903, Marie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She shared the Physics prize with Pierre and Henri Becquerel. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, making her the first person ever to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences. Marie Curie's life was not easy. She faced discrimination because she was a woman and a foreigner in France. After Pierre died in 1906, she continued her research alone. She spent years studying radioactive materials without knowing the health risks. Sadly, she died in 1934 from a disease caused by long exposure to radiation. Despite these difficulties, her contributions to science changed the world forever.
