The relationship between language and thought has been a subject of intense scholarly debate since the early twentieth century. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, in its strongest form, posits that the language one speaks fundamentally determines the way one perceives and categorises reality. While this strong version has been largely discredited, a weaker formulation — that language influences, rather than determines, thought — has garnered substantial empirical support. Research on colour perception provides a compelling example. Speakers of Russian, which has distinct words for light blue ('goluboy') and dark blue ('siniy'), have been shown to distinguish between these shades more rapidly than English speakers, who use a single term for both. Similarly, speakers of Kuuk Thaayorre, an Aboriginal language that uses cardinal directions rather than relative spatial terms, demonstrate remarkable spatial orientation abilities. These findings suggest that linguistic categories do not merely label pre-existing conceptual distinctions but can actively shape the cognitive processes involved in perception and reasoning. Critics, however, caution against overstating these effects, noting that humans possess considerable cognitive flexibility and are capable of making distinctions even when their language lacks specific terms for them.
