Passage

The widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is frequently heralded as a cornerstone of the transition to a sustainable energy future. Governments around the world have set ambitious targets: the European Union plans to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, and several countries have announced even earlier deadlines. However, a closer examination of the full lifecycle of electric vehicles reveals a more nuanced picture than the prevailing narrative suggests. The production of lithium-ion batteries, which power the vast majority of EVs, involves the extraction of minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Mining these materials carries significant environmental costs, including habitat destruction, water contamination, and carbon emissions from energy-intensive extraction processes. Cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which supplies approximately 70 percent of the world's cobalt, has been linked to severe human rights abuses, including child labour. While technological innovations are gradually reducing the amount of cobalt required per battery, the ethical concerns surrounding supply chains remain a pressing issue. Furthermore, the environmental benefit of driving an EV depends heavily on the source of electricity used to charge it. In countries where the grid is powered predominantly by coal, the lifecycle carbon emissions of an EV may not differ dramatically from those of an efficient petrol vehicle. Conversely, in regions with a high proportion of renewable energy, EVs offer substantial emission reductions. This geographic variability means that blanket claims about the environmental superiority of EVs can be misleading. None of this is to suggest that the transition to electric vehicles is misguided. On the contrary, EVs remain a critical component of climate strategy. However, meaningful progress requires addressing the full supply chain — from ethical mining practices to grid decarbonisation — rather than treating the adoption of EVs as a singular solution.
