TOEFL Formatı Test 2
Passage
The discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming is often described as one of the most significant accidents in scientific history. Fleming noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum had contaminated one of his bacterial cultures, and the bacteria surrounding the mold had been destroyed. Although Fleming published his findings, he lacked the resources to develop the substance into a usable drug. It was not until 1940 that Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain successfully purified penicillin and demonstrated its effectiveness in treating infections. Mass production began during World War II, saving countless lives on the battlefield. The antibiotic revolution that followed transformed modern medicine, yet today scientists warn that the overuse of antibiotics is leading to resistant bacteria, potentially undoing decades of medical progress.
