Passage

The concept of 'slow travel' has gained popularity as an alternative to the fast-paced, destination-focused tourism that dominates the modern travel industry. Rather than rushing between iconic landmarks and ticking items off a checklist, slow travel encourages visitors to spend extended periods in a single location, immersing themselves in the local culture, cuisine, and daily rhythms of life. Proponents argue that this approach leads to more meaningful experiences, reduces the environmental impact of travel by minimising flights, and benefits local economies by directing spending toward small businesses rather than international hotel chains. The movement has its roots in the broader 'slow' philosophy that began with Slow Food in Italy during the 1980s, which opposed the rise of fast food and advocated for traditional, locally sourced meals. Slow travel applies similar principles to tourism: valuing quality over quantity, depth over breadth, and connection over consumption. Travellers who embrace this philosophy often choose trains over planes, rent apartments instead of booking hotels, shop at local markets, and take the time to learn basic phrases in the local language. Critics, however, point out that slow travel is a privilege accessible primarily to those with flexible schedules and sufficient financial resources. Workers with limited annual leave may not have the luxury of spending three weeks in a single village in Tuscany. Moreover, some argue that the romanticisation of slow travel can inadvertently create an elitist narrative that dismisses shorter trips as inherently less valuable. Despite these criticisms, the movement continues to grow, particularly among remote workers and retirees who have the freedom to travel at a slower pace.
