Vertical farming is an innovative agricultural method that involves growing crops in stacked layers inside controlled indoor environments. Unlike traditional agriculture, which depends heavily on weather conditions and seasonal cycles, vertical farms use artificial lighting, precise climate control, and hydroponic or aeroponic systems to cultivate plants year-round. Proponents argue that this approach uses up to 95 percent less water than conventional farming because the water is recycled within the system. Additionally, vertical farms can be built in urban centers, reducing the distance food must travel from farm to consumer and thereby cutting transportation emissions. Critics, however, point out that the energy costs associated with powering artificial lights and climate control systems are substantial. A single vertical farm can consume as much electricity as a small town. Despite this drawback, advances in LED technology and renewable energy sources are steadily making vertical farming more economically viable, and the number of commercial vertical farms worldwide has tripled in the past five years.
