Passage

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an enormous collection of floating debris located between Hawaii and California. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a solid island of trash that can be seen from space. Instead, it consists mostly of microplastics — tiny fragments smaller than five millimeters — suspended in the upper water column, making it largely invisible to the naked eye. Ocean currents known as gyres trap these particles in a slowly rotating system that prevents them from dispersing. Marine biologists have discovered that fish, sea turtles, and seabirds frequently ingest these microplastics, mistaking them for food. The toxic chemicals attached to these particles then accumulate in the animals' tissues and can eventually enter the human food chain. Several international organizations have launched cleanup efforts, but scientists emphasize that preventing plastic from entering the ocean in the first place is far more effective than attempting to remove it afterward.
